Mt. Greenwood Redevelopment Survey - Ongoing Event
We are reaching out to residents and businesses in the area for suggestions, comments and ideas. The goals of this survey are to: 1) assess the needs of the immediate area, and 2) offer the community a venue for input.
The results of the survey will be used to: 1) develop a list of potential tenants to target for commercial locations, and 2) initiate other improvements where feasible.
Please take a few minutes to answer our brief survey at the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Y9L7TBF.
Thank you for your interest in maintaining and improving Mt. Greenwood through commercial redevelopment. You can learn more about efforts at www.mglrc.com. To join our email list, simply send your contact information to mglrc2000@wowway.com.
You Can Help a Soldier - Ongoing Event
Our group, Hands from the Heartland, is made up of knitters and crocheters who come from several of the south suburbs. We knit or crochet scarves, neck gators, and helmet liners for our troops serving in Afghanistan, where the winters are very cold, especially in the higher elevations. Since 2010, we have shipped 900 items to chaplains at Forward Operating Basis to distribute to the service men and women in their care.
We will be continuing this project in 2012. We do not believe that all the soldiers in Afghanistan will be brought home, especially those that we ship to who are serving in the mountains along the Pakistan border. More workers are needed to help meet the requests for our “warm stuff.” We also need donations for the 100% wool that is provided at no cost to our workers.
If you are looking for a worthy project to apply your skills, this is it. Please join us. If you can only make 1 item, you will have helped to keep a soldier a little warmer next winter. For further information, call Mary McDermed at 708-799-5071 or search on the internet at Southtownstar Mary McDermed.

RecycleBank Pilot Program
The City of Chicago launched the RecycleBank pilot program in designated areas. For the first time, many residents in the 19th Ward will be rewarded for their recycling efforts!
RecycleBank motivates households to recycle by rewarding each household for the amount they recycle. RecycleBank measures the amount of material recycled and then converts that amount into RecycleBank Points that can be redeemed for gift cards, groceries, and products at more than 1,900 local and national Reward Partners. RecycleBank Partners include national retailers such as Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, Target.com, Ruby Tuesday’s and CVS/pharmacy, as well as local participating Chicago businesses, such as Leona’s, County Fair, Carson Pirie Scott, Treasure Island, the Chicago White Sox and the Children’s Museum. There is also an option to donate your RecycleBank Points to local school environmental programs, charities and non-profits.
“Partnering with RecycleBank will both increase our recycling rates and lower our waste output. It brings a proven recycling rewards program to our community” - Mayor Richard M. Daley.
How do I know if I am part of the pilot program?
If you received a mailer from RecycleBank containing your personal activation code and your recycling cart was outfitted with a special ID tag, then you’re a part of the pilot program. Check your cart for this tag and then activate your account today! If you’re still not sure, call RecycleBank Customer Care at 1-888-727-2978 to verify your participation.
If you’re not part of the pilot program but want to participate, you can still open a RecycleBank account to earn rewards for recycling electronics and other green behavior. Go to www.RecycleBank.com or call us at 1-888-727-2978.
